Many have heard that when two or three are gathered together in the name of Jesus, he is right there with them. That’s true, but it’s not what Jesus was teaching in the passage that we discuss today. Matthew’s Gospel is directed at Jews who would have been familiar with the Old Testament and the concept that coming together with two or three witnesses was always employed when confronting sin. Matthew 18:20 is about the process of bringing a lost and wandering sheep back in the fold. Jesus wants to use the church to lovingly confront, humbly forgive, and gently restore.
The Lord is My Shepherd
What does it mean for the Lord to be our Shepherd? According to David in Psalm 23, it means that we shall never be in want of anything. We will be made to slow down, quiet down, and sit down. Our souls will be restored and whole, like they were designed to be from the beginning. We shall not fear evil or death – no matter what we’re facing. Many of us know the Psalm… Let’s make sure we know the Shepherd.
