In Philippians 3, Paul writes like an accountant, an athlete, and an alien. As an accountant, he communicates that his religious “profits” are actually losses compared to knowing Jesus. As an athlete, his example shows a man straining toward the finish line, pressing on toward the prize. As an alien and stranger in the world, Paul encourages the church to remember their status as “citizens of heaven.” As we read through Paul’s story, we are encouraged to make it our own.
