Do you remember the ceramic figurines with the sweet smiling faces, deep eyes and rosy cheeks? My grandmother had several. My mom did as well.
They were sometimes religious in nature, sometimes happy, and almost always illustrated some kind of poignant family moment.
I must say, in twenty something years since my childhood I have not grown at all more fond of these particular figurines; however, I have grown to appreciate the symbolism. The precious moment.
What comes to your mind when you think of a precious moment? A surprise party? Exchanging of vows? A baby’s first cry? A moment of triumph? Our lives are filled with diverse memories of precious moments. These special situations and unique occasions, etch themselves upon our hearts—distinctive memories for years to come.
Have you ever wondered about God’s role in the precious moments in your life?
Might God be the author of precious moments? Might there be times that God divinely establishes? Might there be times he sets apart from the norm in order for you to be embraced by a one-of-a-kind moment painted in his grace?
“For I know that the Lord is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. Whatever the Lord pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps. He it is who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth, who makes lightnings for the rain and brings forth the wind from his storehouses. Psalm 135:5-7
Our Heavenly Father is constantly at work in our lives. Even Jesus said “my Father is working until now, and I am working.” (John 5:17). The plans of God will not be thwarted in his pursuit of his glory. It is in fact, “his good pleasure” (Phil 2:13) to work in our lives.
The precious moments in the life of the believer are all but guaranteed to be orchestrated from God who has determined “all things work together for good for those who love him” (Romans 8:28).
Could God choose to bless us with these precious moments so that we might enjoy him more?
YES! The degree of your enjoyment in God is proportional to the level of God’s worth in your life.
The more you treasure him, the more value he has in your life.
The more value God has in your life the more he is glorified by the affections of your heart!
I love the example of the husband bringing flowers to his wife. He adores her, and his great joy in her leads him to buy flowers as an illustration of her value to him.
Our joy in God evidences his value to us. Each day you will find opportunities to rejoice in God. Such precious moments must never slip past us! We must never take for granted the fragile whispers of the day beckoning us to enjoy God more.
Let me explain.
A few nights ago, it was my turn to put my daughters to bed. Tobin and Toryn are without a doubt fun, and beautiful and sweet and easily two of the greatest blessings of my life, and I truly love them. But as soon as bedtime comes around, they transform into some kind of creature bent on anarchy and the destruction of all things.
Needless to say it can be exhausting.
After trying to lull them to sleep with a pair of iPads. A familiar cry came from Toryn, “Daddy, I want youuuuu”. Immediately her older sister followed suit, “Daddy I want you tooooo. Read us a storyyyy!”.
At this point I would have preferred to continue scrolling through Instagram on my phone or reading up on some random science or history topic like the construction of the Panama Canal. But instead I put my phone down. I moved to the side of their bed and told my two daughters, that I would not be reading a story to them.
I was going to make up a new story!!
In an instant the next twenty minutes passed by. My story entertained my two girls straight to sleep. The harrowing tale of two sisters, Toto, BooBoo, their magic owl friend, Eldor, and their quest to rescue the mighty wizard captured their attention and created a one-of-a-kind moment.
As I quietly prepared to leave their room I caught myself embraced in a precious moment.
“I just held an audience with two of my favorite people in the world, and I got to make up a funny story and they love me for it!?! How cool is this??”
In that moment God reminded me of the greatest gift he has ever given any of us:
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God” Ephesians 2:8
The precious moment God saved me from my sin, and transformed my heart would one day lead me to this precious moment right now.
Wave after wave of gratitude washed over me like sand on the seashore. My thoughts could only think on how good God is that he would allow me to be this man. This man right here in the doorway. Still-flawed-man. Still-imperfect-man. Still-yells-at-cars-in-traffic-man. Still-loved-by-God-man, and covered in perfect grace to be able to show the love of a father to his daughters.
In this precious moment I have only God to thank and adore with every fiber of my heart. There is none more valuable than the God who has given me everything I have. He is forever my greatest treasure! And every good and perfect gift is from him!
How do the precious moments in your life turn you toward God? How might you listen for the precious moments today, capture one and see the presence of God’s hand?
Will you love him more when you realize he has appointed this moment? Will you enjoy his presence? Will you adore him and value him with all you have?
I sure hope so! It’s a beautiful life we each have, and it’s filled with more precious moments than you can imagine.
To God be the glory!
